MEMS sensor innovation and technology has taken us to the point where we can detect all manner of ambient energy with the tiniest of devices, and employ the data in useful, if not critical, applications that help us perceive more, perform better, and stay safer. While there is enormous scope for increasingly sophisticated use of combined sensor data, there are serious latency, bandwidth and security challenges emerging across all personal electronics, industrial and automotive markets in relation to the transfer of such large quantities of data to and from centralized systems and cloud servers.
Real-time, low-power, local and edge data processing capabilities represent among the most viable and sustainable routes forward, and ST is shaping its technology and MEMS sensor product portfolio in pursuit of stringent power management targets in combination with extremely exciting developments in learning hardware and artificial intelligence engines.

ST’s pressure sensors are increasingly being used in smartphones, tablets and wearable technology such as sports watches, smart watches, and fitness bands, enabling accurate floor detection and enhanced location-based services, allowing more accurate dead-reckoning calculations, and opening the door to new industrial applications, like smart flow detectors and predictive maintenance. This new generation of sensors embed an analog hub sensing functionality which is capable of connecting an analog input and converting it to a digital signal for embedded processing. In addition, an embedded Qvar (electric charge variation detection) channel can be enabled for sensing in applications such as water leakage detection, tap, double-tap, long press, and L/R - R/L swipe.

Device-to-cloud security and connected device manageability have to be re-thought to make the IoT successful. The transition from unconnected to connected products has uncovered fundamental issues with how software is built for microcontrollers. A reference architecture needs to cover security at the hardware level with secure boot, at the firmware level with failsafe FOTA, and at the cloud level.
To achieve competitive time-to-market for new IoT solutions, the embedded engineer cannot be burdened with connectivity and security. This talk will walk you through a reference architecture for modern IoT infrastructure as well as give an introduction to, and demonstration of, Twilio Microvisor, an implementation of said architecture based on the STM32U585 MCU and leveraging Arm TrustZone. This offers managed connectivity and security, including secure remote debugging — an industry-first.
2:00 – 2:25
Presenter: Markus Mayr, STMicroelectronics
We will introduce ST’s edge AI development platforms: Cube AI and NanoEdge AI Studio in the context of an Edge AI project. This presentation will highlight the necessary steps for product development built around Edge AI on STM32 platforms, and the solutions enabled by ST tools. From project definition to data collection and model optimization, we will take you through all the required steps through an example use-case.

Come learn how to implement secure and measured boot using the new STM32U5 with wolfBoot. We have out-of-the-box support for the new U5 with exciting features like delta or encrypted updates. Our secure boot solution uses industry best practices based on RFC9019 (a firmware update architecture for Internet of Things). It also supports a root of trust (key store) with support for multiple public keys, measured boot using TPM (or similar device) and support for ECC, RSA and ED25519.
